13. Youth Financial Literacy Education Now Law Across New York’s Youth Summer Jobs Programs
Some 73,000 youth enrolled in the New York’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) will begin their summer work experience this week with mandated financial literacy education due to a law which takes effect this month and authored by Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, chair of the Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force. While financial literacy was a component already in place in some of the regional summer jobs programs, such as the City of Schenectady and the City of New York, not all municipalities offering the jobs program were doing so. This new law (Chapter 421 of the Laws of 2014) took effect on July 1, 2016 and impacts all youth in SYE programs which began this week.
