This past Saturday morning, fifteen minutes prior to the 9:00 am rain barrel giveaway start time homeowners from Bergen Beach, Canarsie, East New York, Flatlands, Georgetown, Marine Park, Mill Basin, Mill Island, Ocean Hill / Brownsville, Sheepshead Bay and Starrett City were lined up at Senator Persaud’s District Office to receive their free rain barrel that was donated by New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP). By 1:00 pm, all 100 of the rain barrels were claimed and on their way to be setup for this seasons’ rain showers. Those who received rain barrels were able to immediately put them to use as rain showers fell sporadically over the region throughout the rest of the weekend.
Rain barrels are an efficient way to reduce water bills and to protect our waterways from sewer runoff pollution. Homeowners can use the collected water for cleaning their car, watering their gardens and other miscellaneous uses. We are looking forward to our next Rain Barrel event. **For those who were unable to partake in this event please check again next year. NYC DEP will not have anymore rain barrels until 2017.
