Squadron Passes Senate Resolution Honoring Lunar New Year

NEW YORK – State Senator Daniel Squadron honored Lunar New Year, the Year of the Rooster, and New York’s Asian-American community with a New York State Senate Resolution (J20) he introduced, which was unanimously adopted by the Senate. “This Legislative Body honors the Asian-American community of the State of New York as it celebrates the Lunar New Year in the Year of the Rooster,” Squadron’s resolution reads in part. “It is said that people take on characteristics based upon the animal of their birth year, and those born in the Year of the Rooster are said to be characterized by hard work, honesty, courage, loyalty. It is with great celebration that public schools in New York City now recognize the Lunar New Year as a holiday, acknowledging the festival's widespread veneration and observance across the city.”

Squadron successfully led the push for Lunar New Year to be designated a NYC public school holiday in 2015, including passing legislation authorizing the designation along with Assemblymember Kim, Senator Golden, and colleagues.
