May 23, 2017
(Albany) - Today, State Senator Gustavo Rivera released the following statement as bill S1070, also known as the "Healthy Teens Act", was reported out of the Senate Health Committee. This bill, sponsored by State Senator Gustavo Rivera in the New York State Senate and Assemblymember Richard Gottfried in the New York State Assembly, will establish an age-appropriate sex education grant program for teenagers throughout New York State. The bill has now been referred to the Senate Finance Committee.
"Today, we took an important step to ensure that teens throughout our State have access to age-appropriate sex education. As the Ranking Member of the Senate Health Committee and the sponsor of the Healthy Teens Act, I am proud that our State is prioritizing this measure as it will provide our youth the necessary resources and information to make well-informed decisions. I will continue working with my colleagues in the Senate to create effective programs across our State that will not only reduce statewide rates of teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, but also help guide our youth to make the right decision as they become healthy adults."
