Statement From State Senator Gustavo Rivera on Trump's Comments Regarding Puerto Rico's Debt
Sen. Gustavo Rivera
October 4, 2017
"Since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico and left 3.5 million Americans facing life threatening circumstances, the response from Mr. Trump and his administration to this unprecedented humanitarian crisis has been nothing short of slow, inept, irresponsible and, simply put, cruel. The one statement made by Mr. Trump that is actually in the best interest of the Puerto Rican people was stating the Puerto Rico's debt had to be wiped out. It is clear that Puerto Rico cannot rebuild while a $70 billion debt hangs over its head. Now is the time for Mr. Trump to show the negotiating skills he boasts so much about and deliver for the people of Puerto Rico. We need to hold this administration accountable and continue to push them to do the right thing."
