The Campus Launch in Crown Heights

Coding, meditation, and poetry classes were part of “the Campus” expansion into Crown Heights today. “The Campus,” the first tech and wellness hub at a public housing site in the United States, began in Brownsville in the Fall of 2016 linking the Howard Houses Community Center, Brownsville Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, and two schools (Brooklyn Collaborative Middle School and P.S. 298 Dr. Betty Shabazz). In Brownsville, “the Campus” offers both in-school and after-school programming around science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, as well as wrap-around support including wellness and career development.
The expansion of “The Campus” into Crown Heights continues the holistic approach, with in-school offerings on computer science, poetry & language arts, and wellness, presented in partnership with Digital Girl, the Green Earth Poets Café, and Urban Asanas Yoga Studio. All three will host programs for students at M.S. 61 on March 3rd. Additional partners for the M.S. 61 site include S.O.S. Crown Heights, Global Trauma Research at Haitian American Community Coalition (GTR HCC), Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, and Seeds in the Middle. A limited number of in-school Campus classes and workshops begin in the Spring of 2017, with the full complement of programming expected in the Fall 2017.
Thanks to all the educators, nonprofit partners, and students who made today’s launch such a success!
