Senator Leory Comrie Remarks on the Fire in Queens Village
April 24, 2017
I am heartbroken by the news of the fire in Queens Village. We lost five individuals—four children and one young adult woman—in what the mayor noted is the worst fire tragedy in years. I send my deepest condolences to the friends and family of those we lost at this tremendously difficult time.
On Sunday, I thanked the FDNY and the NYPD personnel at the scene on behalf of our community for their professionalism and dedication in the face of this unspeakable tragedy. I implore everyone to check the gas lines and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes as soon as possible. In the coming weeks and months, my office will work with the FDNY and other emergency response agencies and local civic organizations in order to disseminate fire safety information and resources to community members.
I lastly would like to thank all of you who have called my office looking to provide assistance to the affected families. As the investigation continues, we will get a better idea of what kind of assistance may or may not be needed. Until then, you may call my office at (718) 765-6359 to leave your information so that we can provide you with updates.
