Letter to the Editor: Health Fair's Success Benefits Community

Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer

Senator Ranzenhofer's Letter to the Editor was published in the Amherst & Clarence Bees on August 30th.

Dear Editor:

Earlier this month, I sponsored Erie County’s largest Family Health Fair for a sixth time, and it was our most successful event ever!

Over 1,000 residents attended the three-hour fair to learn more about their health and partake in 18 different preventative health screenings, including:

  • 245 glucose and cholesterol tests
  • 170 retina scans
  • 90 bone density heel scans
  • 86 skin cancer screenings
  • 84 hearing tests
  • 80 prostate cancer screenings
  • 75 foot screenings
  • 42 flu shots
  • 10 pneumonia shots

A total of 22 residents presented–at the event’s Unyts blood drive– to give the gift of life. The demand for blood tends to outpace supply throughout the summer, making blood donations critically important this time of year. Fourteen whole blood units were collected, potentially saving up to 42 lives in Western New York!

Erie County’s largest Health Fair would not be possible without the efforts of our community partners: Kaleida Health, Upstate Niagara Cooperative, ABARTA Coca-Cola Beverages, Tops, Amherst Center for Senior Services, health providers, volunteers and staff.

Thank you for working with me to improve the health and wellness of so many residents in our community!

Sincerely,
Michael H. Ranzenhofer
State Senator – 61st District
