Brooklyn & Beyond: Dancewave’s 2017 Spring Gala honors Senator Montgomery
Senator Velmanette Montgomery
April 25, 2017
This year, Dancewave honored Jody Gottfried Arnhold, Camille A. Brown, and Senator Velmanette Montgomery, three incredible women in our community championing dance and education. Senator Montgomery was recognized for her unwavering dedication to the arts and her visionary leadership in support of community empowerment.
In 2016, Senator Montgomery and Assemblywoman Simon sponsored a law that enabled New York State, through the Dormitory Authority, to assist Dancewave with low-interest capital construction financing to help build the organization's new community arts and cultural center in Brooklyn. The state's assistance with the new Dancewave Center will allow the non-profit organization to expand its programming and provide affordable community rental space for rehearsals, events and performances.
Since its inception in 1995 by Diane Jacobowitz, Artistic/Executive Director, Dancewave has created programs that are challenging and artistically substantial, and which address young people's needs for individual achievement and group identity. Their pre-professional dance education and performance training programs offer young people a rare combination of high-level artistic integrity, educational rigor, and nurturing support.
Dancewave is the dance education nonprofit that focuses on the development of the whole person through a dance experience accessible to all. Our unique model combines rigorous training with artistic integrity, and access for all, in a supportive environment. Students are mentored by accomplished dance professionals, which allows for personal growth as well as superior dance education. Dancers have the opportunity to join our pre-professional dance companies, where they gain technical proficiency and self-confidence through training, rehearsals, and performances.
