Congratulations to the 500 Block MacDonough Street Association on their Diamond Anniversary
Senator Velmanette Montgomery
July 8, 2017
Senator Montgomery commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the 500 Block MacDonough Street Association. Throughout its distinguished history, neighbors have worked in solidarity to foster a sense of community, civic responsibility and pride in its block by improving the quality of life for all residents.
Starting in 1957 with their first president Ms. Dane to their current president Stefani Zinerman, the block association has worked diligently to make a positive difference in the Stuyvesant East area of Bedford Stuyvesant through civic engagement, economic development, and beautification initiatives. The celebration included dance performances and the co-naming of MacDonough street as “Jackie Robinson Way”. Jackie Robinson, the an iconic symbol of change, for African-Americans in professional sports, and an activist for social change, resided on our block at 526 MacDonough Street from 1947 to 1952.
