Senator Hoylman Hosts Second Annual Senior Resource Fair
July 13, 2018
NEW YORK – On Tuesday, July 10, State Senator Brad Hoylman (D, WF-Manhattan) co-hosted his second annual senior resource fair with SEIU 32BJ. More than 500 seniors from Senator Hoylman’s district attended the event, which featured representatives from fifty-eight nonprofits and city and state agencies, including the office of New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, AARP, and the New York Legal Assistance Group.
Participating organizations offered free services for seniors, caregivers, and family members such as assistance with affordable housing programs, legal advice, and enrollment in government programs. Visiting Neighbors performed over 175 blood pressure screenings, SUNY Optometry conducted 48 vision screenings, and the Department of Finance helped over 50 people to freeze their rents. Attendees were also given free reusable bags and a senior resource guide to help identify important benefits, services, and information across the community.
State Senator Brad Hoylman said: “Despite the myriad of programs available to seniors in New York, many go unused just from lack of awareness. Our senior resource fair is a remedy to this problem, and thanks to the work of SEIU 32BJ and our co-sponsors, we were able to put fifty-eight organizations under one roof with seniors and their caregivers. Moreover, senior citizens are New York City’s largest growing population. They are the backbone of our community here in Senate District 27, and deserve to age with dignity and respect.”
