Senator Rivera on Attacks on Asylum Seekers at the United States - Mexico Border
November 26, 2018
It is horrifying, but not surprising, that our government is using violence as its sole strategy to deter innocent people from legally applying for asylum in our country, defying U.S. and international law. From U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents firing tear gas on defenseless children and their parents, to detaining, caging, and indefinitely separating young children from their families, this country is violating the basic human rights of individuals escaping the inexplicable horrors happening in their homes in Central America.
Our country is in the middle of a moral crisis that is testing the values and ideals that we as Americans have supposedly pursued for centuries. Anyone who defends these actions cannot possibly claim to be moral, righteous or patriotic.
This is without a doubt the most monstrous, nativist, xenophobic, and racist administration in living memory. Not acknowledging that is supporting it.
In a time of so much darkness, I am imploring you to remain outraged and active because our actions to protect humanity and decency have never been more critical or necessary.
In ways big and small and every single day: RESIST.
In solidarity,
Gustavo Rivera
New York State Senate
33rd District
