Senator Rivera Condemns Trump Administration's Proposed Changes to 'Public Charge' Rule
September 24, 2018
"Now that we can review the details to the proposed changes to the 'public charge' rule, it is abundantly clear that the Trump administration will use every tool at their disposal to limit legal immigration, while continuing to punish the poorest among us.
Immigrant families across our country including in New York State, who rely on government benefits to cover their basic needs such as food, healthcare, and housing, will be forced to make the agonizing decision between ensuring their wellbeing and safety, or obtaining a legal immigration status, simply because they need assistance making ends meet.
This threat to immigrants is egregious and we must not stand idly by. I renew my call on the Governor as well as all New York representatives to loudly demand that this rule is not imposed so that we protect our immigrant families from the vicious attacks of this administration."
