LGBT+ Rights Are Human Rights

Alongside community partners, I hosted a film screening of “Call Me Kuchu” and panel discussion on LGBTQIRights and Human Rights at the Dweck Center at Brooklyn Public Library's Central Branch this evening. Partners in the event included the Center for Constitutional Rights, Brooklyn Community Pride Center, Caribbean American Pride, The Black Institute, the Center for Anti-Violence Education, and Emblem Health. Thanks to all the members of the community who were able to join us and thanks to the discussants seving on our panel for their observations and insightful discussion. 

“Call Me Kuchu” is an award-winning feature-length documentary that portrays the last year in the life of the late Ugandan gay activist, David Kato, who was tragically murdered in 2011. Filmed over the course of 18 tumultuous months from 2009 to 2011, the film examines the realities faced by David and those in the wider LGBTQI activist community in Uganda as they fight a proposed “Anti-Homosexuality Bill,” while combating persecution and discrimination in their daily lives.
