Senator Bonacic Secures $200,000 in this Year's State Budget for the Village of New Paltz to Offset the Costs Related to SUNY New Paltz
April 2, 2018
(Albany, NY)- State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/C/I-Mt. Hope) announced today that he has successfully advocated for the inclusion of $200,000 in this year’s FY 2018-2019 State Budget for the Village of New Paltz to help offset public safety costs related to hosting SUNY New Paltz. The Village requested the inclusion, and Senator Bonacic made it one of his top budget priorities for this year. Similar amounts were given to the cities of Cortland and Oneonta in the 2016-7 and 2017-18 State Budgets.
“I’m pleased that this year’s budget includes this funding for the Village of New Paltz, who serve as a host community for SUNY New Paltz,” said Senator Bonacic. “While hosting a SUNY institution adds economic vitality to a community, there is still financial stress on the host municipality, including in its policing. These needed funds will help the Village defray some of the public safety costs they incur on a daily basis.”
Village of New Paltz Mayor Tim Rogers said, “The New Paltz Fire Department is entirely volunteer-driven, and an average of 20% of their total annual calls (about 650 total calls for the last few years) are from the SUNY New Paltz campus. We greatly appreciate Senator Bonacic for continuing to support our community.”
