State Senator Shelley Mayer wrote a letter to the Chairman of the NYS Liquor Authority urging the SLA to deny a big box wine and spirits store, Total Wine & More, application to open in Hartsdale, New York.
The opening of the store could threaten the existence of over 50 small and medium sized liquor and package stores in the 37th District.
Senator Mayer writes:
"The entrance of a big box wine and spirits store into the local market presents existential threats to these local businesses. Moreover, with so many local liquor stores in communities across my district and throughout Westchester already creating a vibrant competitive marketplace, it does not appear there is any “public convenience and advantage” for approval of another store that will use its size and buying power and practices to in effect, push out the existing smaller retailers."
