Corning, N.Y., September 6—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats) today reminded area residents that the online registration process is underway for a state-sponsored “Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program” being held in Corning on Monday, September 10 at the Corning High School.
The program is free of charge but participants must complete the online registration prior to the event. According to the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES), registration is limited and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
“As we’ve seen again recently, our region is no stranger to severe storms, floods, and other emergencies,” said O’Mara. “That’s been true across the state and, as a result, this emergency preparedness and response initiative has proven very popular, successful, and worthwhile.”
The state launched the Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program in February 2014. Earlier today, state officials announced that 250,000 New Yorkers have already been trained to be first responders in their own homes and communities. The program seeks to provide citizens with tools and resources to help them better prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters. This year’s theme, “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn Now.” emphasizes the creation of family emergency plans, training in life-saving skills like CPR and first aid, insurance coverage, and establishing an emergency reserve fund.
The September 10 Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program in Corning will be held at the Corning High School (201 Catigney Street) from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The two-hour session is free of charge and participants will receive a NYS Disaster Preparedness Kit containing items that emergency response experts believe are critical to have handy in the immediate aftermath of any disaster or emergency.
