Transit Report: The Ordeal of Southern Brooklyn Commuters
Senator Andrew Gounardes
December 12, 2019
I'm pleased to share with you my Southern Brooklyn Transit Report, the result of months of gathering surveys at every subway station and commuter bus stop in the district. The survey emphasizes what we know to be true: Southern Brooklynites deserve better when it comes to our public transit system.
Here are some big takeaways...
- 90% of riders who responded to the survey said that they are always or sometimes late to their destination.
- 80% of respondents reported that they spend 45 minutes or more on their commute one way, meaning that each day, they are spending 90 minutes or more per day commuting.
- 35% of respondents reported that they spend over an hour getting to work. Only 3.5% of respondents stated that they spend 30 minutes or less on their commute.
- More than 90% of southern Brooklynites who responded to our survey had to transfer at least once on their commute.
I hope you will take the time to read the full report, which includes more information by line, and let me know what you think! If you filled out the survey, thank you so much for your participation in raising awareness of the changes we need to see in our public transportation system. If you didn't get the chance to fill out the survey, I'm still listening. Let me know how your commute is going and what improvements you'd like to see.
We have a long way to go to make our transportation system worthy of the greatest City in the world, and we're in this fight together. We won't stop until we make meaningful change.
