“Today, the Trump Administration once again demonstrated its lack of understanding of the challenges so many Americans face every day to make ends meet. Cutting SNAP benefits to hundreds of thousands of people -- roughly 85,000 New Yorkers -- shows a patent disregard for people’s health and well being. At my recent hearing on these proposed SNAP changes, stakeholders from across our state told me just how devastating they will be for our neighbors and friends struggling to keep food on their tables. The loss of SNAP benefits will have cascading effects, jeopardizing their ability to pay the rent, fill prescriptions, or afford the cost of transportation to their jobs. Adding insult to injury, these changes to the program disproportionately affect people of color, women, and LGBTQ individuals. My colleagues and I in the New York Senate will be taking whatever action we can to counteract these changes and support all New Yorkers.”
