Join Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Assemblymember Tremaine Wright & the Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant for a Rally in Support of Homeowners throughout New York City on September 14, 2019 at 11:30AM in the Community Room of Interfaith Hospital, 1545 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11213.
We will be celebrating the recent signing of Senator Montgomery’s Deed Theft Bill, announcing the release of the legislative report on crises facing homeowners in Brooklyn and discussing what our next steps need to be.
In March of this year, Senator Montgomery joined Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Assembly- member Tremaine Wright, Chair of the NYS Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus to host a Joint Legislative Hearing to Examine the Crisis Facing Homeowners in Brooklyn and throughout New York City.
Over 300 attendees heard testimony from homeowners, legal experts, foreclosure prevention advocates and stakeholders on issues such as the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development’s Third Party Transfer (TPT) Program and its impact on Housing Development Fund Corporations (HDFCs), redlining and predatory lending practices, deed theft and equity fraud, the devastating impact of municipal water and sewer liens, and the court system.
A number of bills were introduced in response to the issues raised. Several of them passed both houses in the legislature and at least two have been signed into law.
