NYSERDA Is Bringing Renewable, Carbon-Free Offshore Wind Energy To New York City

On September 25, 2019, Sen. Montgomery attended the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) Offshore Wind Open House at Sims Municipal Recycling - Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility in Sunset Park. NYSERDA is making it possible for 9,000 megawatts of offshore, renewable, carbon-free wind energy to power up to 6 million homes in New York City by 2035. This will make New York the hub for offshore wind energy in the United States. 

While expressing her support for NYSERDA’s effort in creating environmentally friendly clean energy for New York City residents, Senator Montgomery took the opportunity to emphasize the employment opportunities that this project will bring to the city and how can our youth be part of the labor force of this rising industry. 

What do we do about developing a workforce of young people who will be able to participate in this new emerging industry? How will we make sure that young people; right here in this city, will be able to participate in the new jobs that we are going to be realizing?”  

As residents of a city surrounded by water, the Senator encouraged young people to become familiar with our waterfront and all employment opportunities that exist within the Maritime industry; such as marine engineers, support vessel crew and dockworkers. These are some of the many employment opportunities that will emerge as a result of NYSERDA’s Offshore Wind project. The Senator also highlighted The New York Harbor School, Kingsborough Community College and SUNY Maritime College as educational institutions that are building a pipeline to prepare the young people to be part of the Maritime industry.
