The YWCA of Brooklyn a.k.a. "The Women's House" provides affordable, safe, permanent, housing for over 300 women; social justice advocacy, education and activism; and newly renovated, conveniently located, subsidized offices, event space, and meeting and training facilities for our nonprofit and civic partners in the Brooklyn community. YWCA Brooklyn’s mission is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Among the programs that furthers our mission is the YW LEAD, college access and leadership program, serving low-income girls of color. Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1916, St. Joseph's College has provided an affordable liberal arts education to a diverse group of students. Independent and coeducational, St. Joseph's prepares students for lives of integrity, intellectual and spiritual values, social responsibility and service; lives that are worthy of the College's motto: Esse non videri — "To be, not to seem.". The College teamed up with several local community organizations — including the YWCA Brooklyn; Sigma Gamma Rho, a national collegiate sorority; and Street Rootz Entertainment, a local talent management, branding and consulting business — to gather and distribute school supplies to families served by the Brooklyn YWCA.
