Senator Montgomery meets with members of the Carroll Gardens Association and Neighbors Helping Neighbors as part of Neighborhood Preservation Coalition Advocacy Day
Since 1977, when the Neighborhood Preservation Companies Act, sponsored by late Assemblyman Herman “Denny” Farrell Jr., was enacted, NPCs have provided critical housing services to residents in low-and moderate-income neighborhoods. New York State’s 143 Neighborhood Preservation Companies (NPCs) are the backbone of their communities. From developing low, supportive and affordable housing; to providing New Yorkers assistance with housing rehabilitation, home buyer counseling, tenant counseling, landlord/tenant mediation, community rehabilitation and renewal, crime watch programs, employment programs, legal assistance, and Main Street Development.
In 2018, statewide NPCs have:
- 9,432 units of housing were rehabilitated;
- 2,568 first-time homebuyers were assisted;
- 6,841 evictions were prevented and 1,857 foreclosures were prevented;
- 2,298 units of new affordable housing was constructed;
- 27,884 people attended neighborhood workshops, and;
- $451,839,293 was raised for LMI communities
The Carroll Gardens Association was formed as a strong grassroots neighborhood organization that organized in the 1960’s. It was incorporated in May of 1971, as a not-for-profit organization chartered by the State of New York, to assist the disadvantaged and to create a spirit of community participation and comradeship by making the interests of one the interest of all. CGA is dedicated to community empowerment through programs that preserve and develop affordable housing, enforce quality housing through real estate management, promote financial literacy and small business economic development, and providing and linking residents to social services and resources to improve the quality of their lives. Founded in 1990, Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) is a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-approved counseling agency based in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, whose mission is to empower low- and moderate-income Brooklyn residents to secure quality housing and build financial assets. NHN is committed to providing the highest quality of service in order to educate and counsel working New Yorkers so they can help themselves; organize people so they can act collectively and help one another; network with other community organizations; and serve as an advocate for and conduit for resources to the communities it serves. NHN achieves this mission through a combination of homeownership and tenant services, as well as organizing and advocacy around local and citywide campaigns that align with a vision of safe, affordable housing in the Brooklyn communities NHN serves. Neighbors Helping Neighbors is now an affiliate of Fifth Avenue Committee.
