Senator Rachel May’s Statement on Eviction Moratorium Legislation
“At this crucial moment, when we are facing twin public health and economic calamities, we must do what we can to prevent people from losing their homes. I am proud to have worked with my colleagues to come up with a system that extends protections to tenants and homeowners who have been unable to make their rent or mortgage payments during the pandemic. Without it, we would see evicted families by the thousands, forced to turn to shelters or to overcrowd the homes of family and friends. The Federal Government is poised to provide about $1.3 billion in rent relief to New York State and its localities, and we plan on making sure that money goes to help tenants and landlords who have been affected by the pandemic as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we need to prioritize the safety, stability, and security of New York families. I thank the Senate and Assembly leadership for bringing us back into session today to pass the Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Moratorium Act.”
