Senator Anthony Palumbo (R,C-New Suffolk), Assemblyman Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor) and Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (R,C-Riverhead) today joined with the New York State Police, members of the Troopers Memorial Fund, Director Richard Causin, Region 10, Department of Transportation, representatives from the Governor’s office and the families of fallen Troopers Thomas J. Consorte, Jose A. Rosado and Donald A. Strand for a memorial ceremony at the Riverside Barracks. Last year, the three area lawmakers sponsored and passed legislation to rename area bridges to honor the memory of the fallen Troopers and stand as a testament of both the dangers and sacrifices men and women in law enforcement make in service to the community.
“I want to thank Assemblywoman Giglio, Assemblyman Thiele, the New York State Police, the Troopers Memorial Fund, the Department of Transportation and the Governor for working together to see this day and bridge renamings in honor of Troopers Consorte, Rosado and Strand come to fruition,” said Senator Anthony Palumbo. “Now, more than ever it is important to remember our men and women in law enforcement who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our communities and their brothers and sisters who continue to hold the line.”
Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio said: “It is my sincere pleasure to join with you today to memorialize the sacrifice that these officers gave for their neighbors. Spearheading this memorial project through Albany was an important goal of mine, and I am glad my fellow legislators joined alongside to make it possible. Our officers give their finest day after day protecting our communities, and it serves us all to honor their sacrifices, and memorialize that which they have done for us.”
“The service and sacrifices of Officers Thomas J. Consorte, Jose A. Rosado, and Donald A. Strand will forever be remembered by the towns of Southampton and Riverhead,” said Assemblymember Fred W. Thiele, Jr. “It was an honor to work with Senator Palumbo and Assemblymember Giglio to secure these permanent memorial dedications in the names of our fallen officers.”
New York State Police, Major George Mohl said: “I want to thank Governor Hochul, Senator Palumbo, Assemblywoman Giglio, Assemblyman Thiele, and the Troopers Memorial Fund for this collective effort to honor and remember our fallen members and their families as they paid the ultimate sacrifice to our great State.”
Under the legislation passed by area lawmakers and signed into law, the following roadways have been renamed to honor the fallen Troopers:
· The Sunrise Highway Peconic Overpass on Route 27 in the Town of Southampton is designated as State Trooper Donald A. Strand Memorial Bridge;
· The Sunrise Highway Speonk Riverhead Road overpass on Route 27 in the Town of Southampton is designated as the State Trooper Jose A. Rosado Memorial Bridge; and
· The State Route 25 overpass at the Long Island Expressway in Riverhead is designated as the State Trooper Thomas J. Consorte Memorial Bridge.
