Senator Pam Helming and Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan made a surprise visit to Water St. Cafe in Geneva on Friday to wish World War II veteran Samuel “Sammy” Ferugia a Happy 96th birthday and present him with a special certificate in recognition of his military service. Mr. Ferugia’s birthday was February 10. They also presented Water St. Cafe owner James Brown with a certificate recognizing the local business for its commitment to its patrons and the Geneva community, including their efforts to secure a new car for Sammy after his was recently stolen.
“It was wonderful to meet Sammy at his favorite breakfast place, wish him a Happy Birthday, and say thank you for his service in World War II. Sammy is beloved by the staff at Water St. Cafe and of course by his many friends and family. It’s great to know Sammy is back behind the wheel, thanks to Water St., Tradition Chevrolet, and so many generous people who stepped up to support him. They have shown us what community is all about,” said Senator Helming.
