June 13, 2023
New York State Senator Anthony Palumbo (R,C-New Suffolk) and members of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office will be hosting an informative seminar for seniors on scam prevention. The senior scam prevention seminar will be held on Thursday, June 22nd at the Riverhead Free library starting at 10:30am. There is no cost to attend the event and pre-registration is not required.
“There is a growing concern for our senior population as criminals continue to seek new ways to target elderly New Yorkers,” said Senator Palumbo. “This seminar will help to keep area seniors informed and aware of the latest scam tactics and provide them with additional help and resources to help them avoid becoming a victim of a crime.”
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in 2021 there were 92,371 older victims of fraud resulting in $1.7 billion in losses. This was a 74% increase in losses compared to 2020. The most frequently used scams against seniors include Government Impersonating Scams, Lottery/Sweepstakes Scams, Robo Call and Phone Scams and the Grandparent scam where individuals impersonate a grandchild in duress to steal funds.
“I want to thank Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney and his office for hosting this important seminar and for their continued efforts to protect Suffolk County’s seniors,” concluded Senator Palumbo.
