Summer is in full swing in WNY and I hope you and your family have a chance to enjoy all that the season has to offer, including warm weather and numerous community activities. This is also a good opportunity to update you on some important topics.
With the Albany legislative session behind us, I am thankful to have more time to spend in the 60th Senate District. Each summer, I make it a point to visit every town and village I represent, often meeting with local elected leaders, law enforcement, small businesses, community organizations and constituent groups. This is especially important in those municipalities new to the district in 2023, including Hamburg, Orchard Park, Clarence and Newstead. These visits are essential for me to best represent residents and our communities at the state level.
Among the places I enjoy visiting are the numerous public libraries throughout the district. Libraries continue to play a vital role in our communities, offering services to residents of all ages. In addition to providing free access to books and movies, they support literacy education, and provide internet and computer access for those doing research or looking to apply for jobs. That is why I continue to support state funding for libraries to ensure these important programs continue and that facilities are up to date and accessible to all. I encourage you to visit your local library this summer.
Speaking of libraries and reading, be sure the young people in your life participate in the New York State Senate Summer Reading Program. Students who read three or more books over summer vacation will receive a certificate from my office. Parents and guardians can find more information at my website: gallivan.nysenate.gov
Summer is also a perfect time to visit one of our beautiful New York State Parks. We are fortunate to have Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, Evangola State Park in Irving and Woodlawn Beach State Park in Blasdell within the 60th Senate District. When you add nearby Buffalo Harbor State Park, Niagara Falls State Park, Letchworth State Park and others, the options to visit one of the best park systems in the country are endless. One note of caution, spending time outside in wooded and grassy areas can raise the risk of Lyme disease and other tick borne illnesses, especially during summer and fall. Be sure to dress appropriately, check your children and pets carefully for ticks and take all the necessary precautions. Important information can be found through the New York State Health Department at health.ny.gov
Finally, summer offers plenty of opportunities to celebrate community and our region's heritage at dozens of fairs and festivals throughout the district. Mark your calendar and let's celebrate all that our region has to offer.
