What is Senator Rachel May's NYS Senate Youth Advisory Board?
Chosen by Senator May, the Youth Advisory Board is an excellent opportunity for high school students to discuss issues and policies affecting transition-aged (ages 12-24) youth in New York State, concentrating on the 48th Senate District, which covers parts of Onondaga County and Cayuga County.
Senator May’s Youth Advisory Board members are uniquely positioned to provide feedback, insight, and recommendations on program design, implementation, and evaluation of policies relevant to young people.
For 2023, the Youth Advisory Board's primary focus is on Environmental Justice and Environmental Racism legislation and policy issues. Board members will get hands-on experience while planning and implementing two events relating to these topics: the State of the Youth Rally and a Climate Justice Rally. Organizing these events also gives board members a unique chance to collaborate with other organizations that share similar concerns.
Members will also have the opportunity to learn how a bill becomes law in New York State by planning a mock legislative session. They’ll also have the chance to interview Senator May and ask questions about her work representing the 48th District in the New York State Senate.
Senator May’s Youth Advisory Board meets once a month virtually. Participants will be required to travel to Syracuse twice: once for a group photo and once for the Climate Rally.
