Community Update: In-the-Community, End-of-Summer Youth Meeting, Ukraine Independence Day

Dear Friends,
It’s hard to believe that another summer is drawing to a close, but I am looking forward to the fall and the beautiful changes the season brings to Westchester.
On August 24, we celebrated the 32nd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. Every day, we continue to stand with Ukraine in its fight to remain free. I was honored to attend a service of Prayer for Peace at Saint Michael’s Ukrainian Church in Yonkers.
This year, as we enjoy the long weekend Labor Day brings, we commit ourselves to supporting the rights of all workers. Labor Day was first celebrated in the United States on September 5, 1882, in New York City and was planned by the Central Labor Union. It began with a march from City Hall to 42nd Street, and ended with a picnic, a concert and speeches. However you choose to spend the long Labor Day weekend, please remember all those who work this weekend, and our union brothers and sisters. We owe them a big debt of gratitude.
For most students in District 37, school begins a day or so after Labor Day. I remember looking forward to the beginning of each new school year with a sense of excitement — organizing my supplies, planning what to wear on the first day, looking forward to seeing my friends and meeting great teachers who would open my eyes to a new world of information and ideas. I hope every student in our community looks forward to going back to school, though I recognize it is not always easy. For students in need, The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester is an amazing resource for school supplies, backpacks and clothing. This year, they are also collecting supplies for those in need in our community. Read below for information on how to donate.
I was also proud to host a back-to-school supply drive for students and teachers in partnership with United Way of Westchester and Putnam Counties. Thank you to all who donated at our multiple drop-off sites.
As always, if there is anything my office can assist you with, please email me at smayer@nysenate.gov or call (914) 934-5250.
Warm regards,
Shelley B. Mayer
State Senator
37th District
