Senator Shelley B. Mayer Statement on Recent Supreme Court Medication Abortion Hearing
Senator Shelley B. Mayer
March 27, 2024
"Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, which threatens access to mifepristone, the first of two drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in medication abortion. In this case, the Trump-appointed Supreme Court majority will decide whether to reverse changes the FDA made in 2015 and 2021 to make it easier for women to access mifepristone, including through telemedicine.
"As we approach two years since Roe v. Wade was overturned, eliminating a right that was long deemed constitutionally-protected, this Supreme Court majority and federal courts around the country continue to question the validity and safety of medication abortions, despite the research and judgment of medical professionals.
"Decisions by the Supreme Court have real, personal, and potentially devastating impact on millions of Americans. While we await the Court’s decision in this case, we must redouble our efforts in New York State to protect women’s bodily autonomy."
