Statement from Senator Liz Krueger On Trump Administration Attack On Offshore Wind

Albany – Senator Liz Krueger released the following statement today in response to President Donald Trump's attempt to stop construction of the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project:

“Another day, another illegal attempt by Trump and Musk to make life worse for more Americans. If they succeed in stopping the construction of Empire Wind 1, the only thing the MAGA extremists will achieve is locking New Yorkers into more expensive and volatile electricity prices, fewer jobs, and increasingly damaging storms, droughts, fires, and floods.

"Trump's wrongheaded attacks on renewable energy won't stop the global clean energy transition - that's inevitable now, driven by pure market economics, although its not happening fast enough. All Trump will achieve is to surrender America's future. Americans will still need wind turbines, solar panels, heat pumps, and EVs, but we'll be forced to buy them from China and Europe, they'll be more expensive, and we won't get the jobs and economic benefits of making them here. It's the opposite of real energy independence, and it will shackle New Yorkers to the whims of petrostate dictators like Vladimir Putin. 

"The Trump Administration's retreat from American climate leadership means states like New York have to step up our game. The future of humanity is at stake, and everyone has a role to play. In New York that means taking bold, smart action like passing NY HEAT and the Stop Climate Polluter Handouts Act, fully implementing Cap & Invest, and any number of other policies that are necessary for us to meet our reality-based climate targets and save New Yorkers money to boot. The budget we're working on right now would be a good place to start."
