Senator Fuschillo And Tobacco Action Coalition Celebrate Anniversary Of Expanded Clean Indoor Air Act

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently joined with the Tobacco Coalition of Long Island to mark the two year anniversary of the passage of New York State’s expanded clean indoor air act. At the event, Senator Fuschillo, who authored the law, accepted over 10,000 signed postcards from residents across the state thanking the New York State Legislature for supporting the expanded clean indoor air act.

"My main goal in writing this law was to safeguard the health of all New Yorkers by protecting them from exposure of harmful second hand smoke," said Senator Fuschillo. "The more than 10,000 individuals who wrote to thank the Legislature for passing this landmark measure show that these protections are welcomed."

In addition, the results of the First Annual Independent Evaluation of New York’s Tobacco Control Program were released. The study, which was conducted by RTI International, showed a large reduction in exposure to secondhand smoke among hospitality workers (waiters, bartenders, etc.).

"The results of the Independent Evaluation reinforce that Smokefree NY is working. Public support has been overwhelming and thousands of New Yorkers are now protected from the dangers of second hand smoke in the workplace," stated Susan Kennedy, Director of Tobacco Coalition of Long Island.

"All signs show that the expanded clean indoor air act is working for customers, employees, and businesses," Senator Fuschillo added. "Thousands of people are now afforded increased protections from the dangers of second hand smoke."
