Senator Fuschillo To Bring "women Of Distinction" Exhibit To Local Libraries

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) announced that the New York State Senate’s "Women of Distinction" exhibit will be on display at both the Freeport Memorial Library and the North Merrick Public Library over the next two weeks.

The display will first stop at the Freeport Memorial Library at 144 West Merrick Road in Freeport from Monday, July 25 through Saturday, July 30 to honor Senator Fuschillo’s 2005 honoree, Councilwoman Angie Cullin. In 1987, Angie Cullin became the first woman in the history of the Town of Hempstead to serve as a member of the Town Board. She again made history in 1993 by becoming the first woman ever to hold the office of Receiver of Taxes. She returned to the Town Board in 2000 as the representative of the fifth councilmatic district, and was reelected again in 2003. In addition to her governmental service, Councilwoman Cullin belongs to a number of local charitable and civic organizations.

The display then moves to the North Merrick Public Library beginning on Monday, August 1 and continuing until Saturday, August 6. The library, located at 1691 Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick, was chosen in honor Senator Fuschillo’s other honoree, Gail Volk. Gail Volk currently serves as Executive Director for the Community Wellness Council of the Bellmores and Merricks, a non profit organization whose mission is to promote substance abuse prevention by fostering emotional and physical wellness.

She is also a Past President of the Child Care Council of Nassau County, a member of the New York State Department of Health’s Tobacco Control, Use, and Prevention Advisory Board. Ms. Volk is also very active in her local temple, organizing numerous charitable and philanthropic endeavors, such as Mitzvah Day and food programs for the needy.

The "Women of Distinction" exhibit provides a history of some of the contributions women have made to New York State. The display will also feature Gail Volk of Merrick and Councilwoman Angie Cullin, Senator Fuschillo’s two honorees for the honor.

The New York State Senate’s "Women of Distinction" program was created in 1998 to recognize outstanding women in our midst -- women living and working in New York State whose contributions have greatly enriched the quality of life in their communities and beyond.

"Women have played such an important role in shaping the history of our state, and it is fitting that we honor and remember their accomplishments and sacrifices over the year," said Senator Fuschillo. "The great thing about this program is that it enables us to recognize women within our communities who have made an impact right here at home. I encourage all residents to stop by one of these local libraries to learn about the many ways women have helped our state become what it is today."
