Senator Fuschillo Delivers Toys To Children In Winthrop Hospital

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently visited the pediatric ward at Winthrop University Hospital to deliver toys collected through his "Extend the Holidays" toy drive.

Senator Fuschillo's "Extend the Holidays" toy drive is a unique tradition that is entering its seventh year. Toys are delivered to children after the holiday season so that they can enjoy a little extra seasonal cheer, and take their mind off being in the hospitals.

"This is a valuable and worthwhile holiday tradition that brings smiles to the faces of children who need a little extra care," said Senator Fuschillo. "It allows the hospital to spread cheer to these children throughout the year, and lets the kids know that everyone in the community is keeping them in their thoughts and prayers."

At the hospital, Senator Fuschillo was joined by members of the Nassau County Sheriffs Officers Association, Laborers Local 66, and Teamsters Local 282, all of whom were instrumental in gathering toys for the program. In addition, numerous local residents, elementary schools, brownie troops, and cub scout packs all participated in the Toy Drive.

"Senator Fuschillo’s Extend the Holidays Program has had a wonderful positive result in Winthrop’s Pediatric Center. It has become a holiday tradition that generates a lot of excitement for the staff, children and their parents," said John Broder, Winthrop University’s Vice President of External Affairs. "Without question, the Senator and his support team sure accomplish a lot. This program is very special…it helps extend the enchantment of the holiday season throughout the year for our very sick kids. And, if the excitement of receiving an unexpected gift during the year helps put a smile on the face of a sick child , what more can we ask for?"

"Seeing the way that all these unions, elementary schools students, and young scouts come together to help out the children in Winthrop hospital is just amazing. With their help, we’ve been able to have our most successful toy drive to date," Senator Fuschillo added. "Being able to organize a program like this and make a difference in the lives of these kids is one of the most rewarding parts of this job."
