Senator Fuschillo Informs Residents About Upcoming Tax Free Week

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) is informing residents that New York State is designating the week beginning Monday, January 30, 2006 as a tax free shopping week.

Eligible clothing and footwear purchases costing less than $110 will be exempt from state sales and use tax between Monday, January 30th and Sunday, February 5th. Also exempt, according to the New York State Department of Taxation, will be items used to make or repair exempt clothing and footwear.

Suffolk County has again opted to join the state in this tax free program, meaning that consumers will have the ability to purchase eligible items without any additional county or state sales tax. In Nassau County, the exemption will apply only to the state's 4% sales and use taxes. Individuals who are purchasing exempt items during the week will still be responsible for the county portion of the sales tax.

"This tax free week gives families added buying power and also allows local retailers to get a boost after the holidays," stated Senator Fuschillo. "I hope that individuals will take advantage of this opportunity to get some shopping done and save money at the same time."
