Senator Fuschillo To Sponsor No-out-of-pocket-cost Breast Screening Program At Seaford Library
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District), in conjunction with the Nassau Health Care Corporation, will be hosting a no-out-of-pocket-cost breast cancer screening day on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at the Seaford Public Library.
"One of the best ways in beating breast cancer is early detection. Women need to make mammograms an annual event in their lives, because they play a vital role in expediting the detection and treatment of breast cancer," stated Senator Fuschillo, a member of the Senate’s Health Committee.
The screenings will be held at the Seaford Public Library, located at 2234 Jackson Avenue in Seaford, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. Appointments are necessary and will be scheduled on first-come, first-served basis. On site nurses and technicians will provide a mammography, a clinical breast examination and instructions for self examination. Patients and their physicians will be notified of the exam results within two weeks.
All Nassau County women ages forty and over are welcome, regardless whether or not they have insurance. Women covered by insurance, Medicaid or Medicare will have their carrier billed, and must bring their information card to the screening. There are no out of pocket costs for patients.
"Mammography vans are important because they provide examination access to people who may not otherwise have it," stated Geri Barish, President of "1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition". "This preventive care leads to early detection, which is the best way to successful treatment."
Senator Fuschillo has been a leading advocate in the fight against cancer in the state. He wrote the law requiring New York State to match the money raised for the Breast Cancer Research and Education Fund through both the state income tax forms and the state's "Drive for the Cure" custom license plate program, which helps support research at New York academic medical institutions and public and private organizations.
