Skelos Announces $1 Million State Grant For Molloy College

New York State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) today announced $1,040,526 in capital funding for Molloy College. As provided through the 2005-06 New York State Budget, these resources were allocated from the $150 million Capital Matching Grants program for the state’s independent colleges and universities.

"Molloy College is an important asset for Rockville Centre and our entire region," said Senator Skelos. "This funding continues to build upon the state’s historic investment in Molloy’s science teacher education program and provides targeted new resources to enhance the College’s role in our local economy."

Statewide, these funds were awarded to independent colleges and universities based upon enrollment and Tuition Assistance Program ("TAP") expenditures. Recipient colleges and universities will be required to raise $3 in non-state funds for each dollar provided through the Capital Matching Grant program. Eligible projects must relate to economic development, high-technology, critical academic facilities and/or urban renewal and historic preservation.

Across Long Island, the region’s independent colleges and universities—including Hofstra University, Adelphi University and Long Island University—received $19.3 million from the Capital Matching Grant program. In addition, the State Budget provided more than $3 billion for capital projects at State University of New York and City University of New York schools.

To address the growing shortage of science and technology teachers in Long Island’s schools, Senator Skelos provided $1.5 million to establish the Long Island Center of Excellence in K-12 Science and Biology Education at Molloy College in 2002. This funding was used to complete a $1.9 million upgrade of its laboratories and enhance its education program for future K-12 science teachers.
