Skelos Announces Availability Of Presidential Memorial Certificates Honoring Deceased Veterans

New York State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) today announced the availability of Presidential Memorial Certificates for families of deceased veterans. A Presidential Memorial Certificate is an engraved, paper certificate signed by the current President honoring the memory of honorably discharged deceased veterans.

"With spring here and Memorial Day fast approaching, the Presidential Memorial Certificate program is a wonderful way to honor and recognize the memory of our veterans," said Senator Skelos.

The Certificate program is administered the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through the National Cemetery Administration. The Department prepares the certificates bearing the President’s signature and expressing the country’s grateful recognition of the veteran’s service in the United States Armed Forces. There is no restriction on the number of years since the veteran’s death and the veteran need not have been killed in action.

Eligible recipients include the deceased veteran’s next of kin and loved ones. Up to 20 certificates may be provided in each individual deceased veteran’s name and there is no charge.

Eligible recipients, or someone acting on their behalf, may apply for a Presidential Memorial Certificate in person at any U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs regional office or by U.S. Mail. Requests may not be submitted via e-mail. While there is no specific form required to request a Presidential Memorial Certificate, a written request, including a copy of the veteran’s discharge and death certificate, must be submitted. As the Department of Veterans Affairs cannot return original documents, recipients should only submit copies.
