Middleburgh Resident Named Senate 'woman Of Distinction'

Senator James L. Seward today announced that R. Carol Coltrain of Middleburgh has been selected as a 2005 New York State "Woman of Distinction."

"I am proud to honor R. Carol Coltrain as a woman of distinction and prouder still of the recognition she has earned from her neighbors, colleagues and friends for her achievements on behalf of her community," said Senator Seward.

Putting "service above self" is a major influence for R. Carol Coltrain of Middleburgh. Pastor of the Huntersland United Methodist Church for 26 years and director of the Schoharie County Office for the Aging, Coltrain has served as a tireless advocate for programs, services and volunteer activities for older citizens.

Mrs. Coltrain formed Middleburgh's Senior Club in 1969 and still serves as volunteer director. Mrs. Coltrain is a board member of the Schoharie County ARC, SUNY Early Childhood Advisory panel, and the Schoharie County Community Action Program. Mrs. Coltrain co-founded the Parent Volunteer Program at Middleburgh Central School, is a Rotarian and was a self-employed business woman for 27 years.

Mrs. Coltrain was recipient of SUNY Cobleskill's 2005 Most Notable Woman award; Middleburgh's 2004 Outstanding Citizen and the Elks' Citizen of the Year.

"Carol Coltrain is one of those success stories that we can proudly share with our daughters, sisters and neighbors and who will serve as an example for achievement and excellence for our entire community," said Senator Seward.

"Her name now joins that of other women whose accomplishments, sacrifices and deeds on behalf of others are deserving of special honor," Seward added.

Mrs. Coltrain is to be honored June 14 at an Albany reception, where her photograph and biography will be displayed in a special public exhibit at the Legislative Office Building.

The Senate’s "Woman of Distinction" program was created in 1998 to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence, or whose professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.
