Unadilla Youth Bound For Environmental Camp

State Senator James L. Seward has announced that Molly Ahearn of Main Street, Unadilla, has been selected to attend a DEC environmental education camp this summer from August 7 - 13. Ahearn, 12, will attend Camp DeBruce in Livingston Manor in the Catskill Forest Preserve.

Legislators can sponsor one student, aged 12 to 17 for one of the state’s four DEC camps, free of charge. The cost is ordinarily $250 per week.

Campers spend one week in hands-on activities that stress the wise use of natural resources, including hiking, stream sampling, birding, canoeing, archery, fishing and hunter safety education. Traditional camp activities, such as swimming and evening campfires, are parts of the week’s events.

"I am pleased to sponsor a student who might not otherwise get an opportunity to attend one of the DEC’s summer camps," Seward said. "For some young people, this is a first chance to look at wildlife and to learn about conservation. For fifty years, the camps have been great opportunities for young people to find out more about our environment, and for some, it may be the start of a future career path."

Ahearn is the daughter of Robin Ahearn of Unadilla.
