John J. Bonacic

State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/I/C - Mount Hope) in an effort to call attention to the selfless sacrifices of our State's veterans, nominated Sullivan County native Al Etkin to be inducted into the New York State Senate's Veterans Hall of Fame.

"As we approach Veterans Day, it is important that we recognize that there are many New Yorkers who served our nation with distinction, courage, and honor, often paying the ultimate price for our freedom," stated Senator Bonacic.

Senator Bonacic continued, "Al Etkin not only has served our Nation with distinction, he continues to serve our community, as an advocate for his fellow veterans. His tireless efforts do not go unnoticed, but you will never hear Al toot his own horn."

"Most recently, Mr. Etkin was instrumental in the enactment of State legislation which I sponsored to encourage that the POW/MIA flag be flown at New York State Police facilities," said Senator Bonacic. Al Etkin is a decorated veteran of the United States Army who served in Korea. As the Director of the Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency from 1994 to 2000, he has helped to improve the lives of thousands of veterans by providing them with entitlement information and assistance relating to veterans law. He further served his fellow veterans as a past District Commander of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Jewish War Veterans and was a member of Congressman Gilman's Veterans Advisory Committee.

Mr. Etkin is the recipient of the Army of Occupation, Good Conduct, and National Defense citiations and the U.S. Army Service, the American Defense Service, Overseas Service and Cold War Victory commemoratives.

The New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame pays tribute to all who serve, but also singles out for special recognition veterans whose service benefits our community and improves the quality of life for many people. "It is with great pride that the State Senate recognizes our very own Al Etkin for his distinguished service to our Nation," concluded Senator Bonacic.
