Senator Flanagan Delivers $23 Million For New Stony Brook University Cancer Center

Albany -- New York State Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced today that he was instrumental in securing $23 million in the 2005-06 State Budget to construct an ambulatory care pavilion which will house Stony Brook University Hospital’s Comprehensive Outpatient Cancer Center.

"I am pleased to be able to secure this funding for Stony Brook University and to aid in the growth and development of the University's Long Island Cancer center," said Senator Flanagan. "This facility will offer better access to care and a wide array of critical services for cancer patients and their families."

"We are grateful to receive this bonding authority for the Ambulatory Care Pavilion currently under construction," said Bruce Schroffel, Director and CEO of Stony Brook University Hospital. "When completed in early 2006, it will house the hospital’s Long Island Cancer Center, Pain Management Services, and a comprehensive outpatient Imaging Center and Breast Center."

Stony Brook University Hospital’s Comprehensive Outpatient Cancer Center will be located in a newly constructed ambulatory care pavilion (ACP). The ACP will be approximately 60,000 square feet, located adjacent to the hospital’s ambulatory surgery center. The cancer center has five major components: the breast center, medical and surgical oncology, pediatric oncology, a patient educational and resource center, and clinical trials.

The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center will provide state of the art diagnostic services for women in approximately 8,500 square feet located on the first floor of the ACP. The breast center will be connected to the ambulatory surgery center for easy access to stereotactic procedures.

The medical and surgical oncology services, located on the second floor of the ACP, are organized to permit the interdisciplinary care of adult cancer patients. These services occupy approximately 13,700 square feet, including exam and procedure rooms and an adult infusion suite.

The pediatric oncology service, also located on the second floor, provides a dedicated space for our pediatric cancer patients that include exam and procedure rooms and a pediatric infusion suite in approximately 4,400 square feet. The clinical trials office, supporting the clinical research for cancer, is approximately 1,700 square feet and located on the second floor of the building. The cancer center also includes a patient education and resource center with conference space of approximately 1,500 square feet.

The hospital’s outpatient imaging and pain services, the remaining clinical components of the ambulatory care teaching facility, will provide cancer patients easy access to PET/CT and MRI imaging services and comprehensive pain management services.

Flanagan noted that the hospital is pursuing what it has described as its Major Modernization Plan (MMP). This is the first substantial expansion and renovation program since the hospital opened in 1980. The MMP is a set of strategic investments in the hospital’s staffing, equipment and physical plant. To maintain and expand their unique medical programs, SBUH is investing $300 million into the hospital over the next five years. Both during construction and after completion, the project will lead to an increase of approximately 1,500 jobs in construction, associated manufacturing work and ultimately, the number of people employed in patient care and staff support. The second and current phase of the MMP includes the Ambulatory Care Pavilion of the Comprehensive Outpatient Cancer Center.
