Senator Nozzolio Announces Adoption Of Legislation Requiring State Reimbursement To Counties

Albany- New York State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio (R-Fayette), Chairman of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee, today announced that the State Senate has adopted legislation he sponsored that will require counties to be fully reimbursed by the State for holding and transporting state parole violators.

“I am extremely pleased that my colleagues in the Senate have adopted this important legislation,” said Senator Nozzolio. “For too long, localities have been forced to hold and transport state parole violators without adequate reimbursement from the State, causing an enormous unfunded mandate onto the counties. This measure will require the State to help pick up the tab.”

New York State currently reimburses the counties $32.00 per day for holding a parole violator awaiting their court date. It is estimated that the actual cost to the counties for holding a prisoner is $100 per day and $175 per day in New York City. This legislation will require the State to reimburse the actual cost to the counties for holding and transporting a state parole violator.

“Parole violators in New York State are the State’s responsibility and the extensive costs involved with holding and transporting them to State prisons shouldn’t be shifted to the counties. As sponsor of this bill, I was proud to fight to ensure that it was passed,” concluded Senator Nozzolio.
