Thomas P. Morahan

SenatorThomas P. Morahan announced that his bill to improve ice cream truck safety was signed into law by Governor George Pataki. The bill was passed unanimously by both the State Senate and the State Assembly. The Senator introduced the legislation following the tragic death of Sara Shuct, a 9-year old Monsey resident who was killed in Septmeber 2003 afater purchasing ice cream from a frozen dessert truck near her home. An oncoming vehicle struck the girl as she attempted to cross the street to return home after making her purchase.

The new law requires frozen dessert trucks to install front crossing arms to be activated when thevehicle is stopped and its occupants are engaged in retail sales. Senator Morahan noted that many school buses already utilize this important safety mechanism intended to protect children.

"I am pleased to have sponsored thislaw which mandates the installation of a safety device that would be activated when anice cream truck is stopped for the purpose of selling refreshments," said the Senator.
