Local Revenue Sharing Announced

Catharine Young

ALBANY - Property taxpayers should be big winners because of an unprecedented boost in state aid to local governments, Senator Catharine Young (R,I,C-Olean) announced today.
Cities in her 57th Senate District will receive more than a 24 percent state aid increase, and town and village funding will rise by 20 percent under a budget agreement between the Senate and the Assembly.

"This increase is huge. Nothing close to it has ever happened since the state began local revenue sharing several decades ago. It will help our local governments keep their costs in line and still deliver vital services. Property taxpayers should see significant relief," Senator Young said.

"I fought very hard throughout budget negotiations for a sizable jump because many of our municipalities are experiencing serious financial difficulties. Those efforts really paid off, because we’re putting more than $2 million extra into my local cities, towns and villages, for a total of nearly $11 million in state aid.

"Both Houses have signed off on the plan, and the Legislature is expected to begin voting on budget bills later this week to meet the April 1 deadline," Senator Young said.

The agreement calls for Jamestown to receive an extra $811,977 for a total of $4,179,592; Dunkirk to get an increase of $267,386 for a total of $1,376,365; Olean to receive an additional $400,136 for a total of $2,059,673; and Salamanca to get a boost of $171,043 for a total of $880,432.

The State Legislature also is including $25 million in the budget to be available as grants to local governments to encourage them to cut costs through shared services.

"It is easier for our smaller communities upstate to share services and save taxpayer dollars. It’s just common sense," Senator Young said.
