North Merrick Resident Chosen As "woman Of Distinction" By Senator Fuschillo
North Merrick resident Alyse Middendorf was selected as a 2006 "Woman of Distinction" by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District). Ms. Middendorf was honored during a special Senate ceremony in Albany, where she received her award from Senator Fuschillo in front of her family and other honored guests.
"Whether it is volunteering to serve the children of North Merrick as a school board member or safeguarding the rights and improving the lives of people with disabilities in her professional life, Alyse has devoted herself to helping others," said Senator Fuschillo. "She is truly worthy of this honor, and I am certain that I speak for the entire community in congratulating and thanking this wonderful woman."
As the Executive Director for Long Island Advocates, a private not-for-profit agency dedicated to protecting the legal rights of individuals with disabilities living on Long Island, she helps provide a variety of services to patients and their families. A Certified Social Worker, she has a private therapy practice that specializes in the treatment of children, adolescents and families, and is the creator of a Sunday Therapeutic Recreation Program for developmentally disabled children. Ms. Middendorf is also the Chairperson of the Commissioner’s Advisory Panel for Special Education.
For the past 15 years, Ms. Middendorf served on the North Merrick Board of Education, and has also been a member of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School Board of Education for the past 9 years. She is a Past-President of both organizations. Ms. Middendorf is also the founder of the North Merrick Special Education Parent Teacher Association.
In addition to being selected as a "Woman of Distinction", Ms. Middendorf received a number of other awards in recognition of her professional and civic accomplishments, including the Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society’s Isabel Schwartz Award for Leadership and Advocacy, the New York State Parent-Teacher Association’s Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award, SCOPE leadership award, and the CAC’s Award of Distinction.
Ms. Middendorf and her husband, Arlington are the proud parents of three children: Adam, Alssandra, and Brittany.
The New York State Senate’s "Women of Distinction" program was created in 1998 to recognize outstanding women living and working in New York State whose contributions have greatly enriched the quality of life in their communities and beyond.
