Senate Passes Fuschillo Bill That Would Require Roosevelt Schools To Spend $6 Million Academic Improvement Grant Only On Students
Following the release of a State Education Department audit that uncovered over 60 examples of mismanagement and $2.4 million in overspending in the Roosevelt School District, the New York State Senate today passed legislation, sponsored by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District), that would ensure the state’s $6 million academic improvement grant goes directly into the classrooms.
"This state funding should be spent on helping Roosevelt students get a quality education," said Senator Fuschillo, a member of the Senate’s Education Committee. "Unfortunately, a sizable portion of these funds are not getting into the classroom, and are instead being used on non-educational expenditures. We need to ensure that every penny of this grant is spent on educating children, nothing else."
The $6 million state academic improvement grant is funding for the Roosevelt School District designed to help increase educational opportunities for students. This grant is in addition to the state aid appropriated by the State Legislature each year as part of the state budget.
This past year, state aid to the Roosevelt School District amounted to over $34 million, which is a 13.43% increase over last year’s totals. In addition, the state budget included over $2.2 million in "Excel Aid", which helps fund building renovation and construction projects in the district.
