Senator Fuschillo And Assemblyman Mcdonough Teach Bellmore-merrick Seniors How To Prevent Id Theft

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) and Assemblyman David G. McDonough (19th Assembly District) recently served as the guest speakers at a recent meeting of the Bellmore-Merrick AARP to teach seniors how to avoid becoming victims of identity theft.

"Identity theft is one of the fastest growing consumer crimes in New York State, and senior citizens are the number one target of ID thieves," said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Consumer Protection Committee. "This meeting was a great way for seniors to learn what steps they can take to help safeguard their privacy and prevent identity theft from occurring."

Senator Fuschillo discussed some of the new laws he authored this year to help people prevent identity theft. These laws include a new security freeze law, which allows people to prevent others from viewing their credit information, and a new law requiring businesses and governments that are disposing of records to shred any documents containing someone’s private information.

Senator Fuschillo also told the seniors about his own experiences as a victim of identity theft.

A representative from the New York State Consumer Protection Board was also on hand to teach the audience how to safeguard their private information and prevent identity theft, what schemes ID thieves use to obtain people’s private information, and what to do if they become a victim of identity theft.
