Senator Fuschillo And Assemblyman Saladino Show Massapequa Park Seniors How To Protect Themselves From Identity Theft

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) and Assemblyman Joseph Saladino (12th Assembly District) recently visited the Brady Park Senior Center in Massapequa Park to teach seniors how to protect themselves from identity theft.

"Seniors are the number one target of ID thieves," said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Consumer Protection Committee. "By teaching seniors about the steps they can take to safeguard their private information, we can help them to better protect themselves from identity theft, which is one of the fastest growing consumer crimes in New York State."

Senator Fuschillo informed the audience about some of the new identity theft protections he authored this year. These laws include a new security freeze law, which allows people to prevent others from viewing their credit information, and a new law requiring businesses and governments that are disposing of records to shred any documents containing someone’s private information.

Senator Fuschillo also told the seniors about his own experiences as a victim of identity theft.

A representative from the New York State Consumer Protection Board was also on hand to teach the audience about the schemes ID thieves use to obtain people’s private information, steps consumers should take before giving out personal information to avoid becoming victimized, and what to do if someone steals their identity.
